Healing Begins with the Heart: Dr. Michael McGee’s Approach to Mental Wellness

Michael-Mcgee-profile.jpg

Dr. Michael McGee approaches psychiatry from the belief that healing is inherently collaborative, relational, and deeply human. While extensively trained in biomedical psychiatry and psychopharmacology, he practices from an integrative, patient-centered paradigm that transcends—but fully incorporates—traditional medical approaches.

He is thoughtfully skeptical of narrow, diagnosis-driven, and pathology-focused models that overemphasize medication while overlooking the broader psychological, relational, cultural, and spiritual dimensions of life. Instead, Dr. McGee practices Integrative Collaborative Psychiatry (ICP)—an emerging model that combines biomedical science with trauma-informed care, developmental and sociocultural perspectives, narrative meaning-making, spirituality, and systems-based interventions.

Therapy, in Dr. McGee’s view, is a co-creative process rather than a standardized protocol. Each treatment plan is uniquely developed with the patient, drawing from a wide spectrum of evidence-based practices and clinical wisdom. Together, clinician and patient cultivate a shared understanding of identity, strengths, challenges, and goals—a framework that evolves as care progresses.

A cornerstone of Dr. McGee’s work is Feedback-Informed Treatment (FIT). At the start of each session, patients complete a brief assessment of their current functioning and emotional state, and at the end, they provide feedback about their care experience. This real-time information enables Dr. McGee to continually optimize the four key elements of effective treatment:

  • The therapeutic relationship

  • The co-created understanding (formulation) of the patient

  • Agreed-upon goals of care

  • The methods used to achieve those goals

Routine outcome tracking allows for rapid treatment adjustments, timely identification and repair of therapeutic ruptures, and ensures care remains responsive to what works best for each individual.

Understanding that much of healing occurs beyond the therapy office, Dr. McGee takes a flexible, strengths-based, and systems-aware approach. When appropriate, this may include collaboration with loved ones, coordination with other clinicians and service providers, advocacy within complex systems, and help in accessing the resources needed to thrive.

Spiritually, Dr. McGee embraces a pluralistic and inclusive perspective. He views spiritual and religious traditions as potential pathways to healing, meaning, and flourishing. For patients who have experienced religious trauma or use religion defensively, he helps discern and retain what is life-affirming while releasing what hinders recovery. His work supports patients in cultivating experiences of goodness, wholeness, connection, and love, regardless of spiritual orientation.

At its core, Dr. McGee’s practice is dedicated to reducing suffering, restoring dignity, and fostering meaningful, engaged, and loving lives through compassionate, collaborative, and evidence-informed care.

With over 30 years of clinical leadership and experience serving thousands of patients, Dr. McGee has developed a trauma-integrated approach to recovery, informed by expertise in general adult and addiction psychiatry. In addition to patient care, he provides training, consulting, and coaching to clinicians and organizations, nurturing both vitality and clinical skill to achieve optimal outcomes.

Dr. McGee embraces a “Be Well, Do Well” philosophy, believing that only when clinicians and patients prioritize their own mental and emotional health can they effectively care for the minds and hearts of others—whether patients, family, or friends.

Cultivate more love and joy in your life, and you’ll transform not only your own life but also the lives of those around you.

Discover your current capacity to love and be loved by taking the Love Skills Assessment—a psychometrically valid and reliable tool designed to illuminate strengths and growth areas in one of the most important human capacities. The foundation of Dr. McGee’s clinical work is the belief that loving and being loved are not fixed traits, but learnable skills that can be systematically developed using the science of expertise: clarifying a baseline, receiving meaningful feedback, working with a coach, and engaging in deliberate practice of both heart-mind and behavioral love practices. Many of us grew up without consistent models of what mature, skillful love looks like, so we were never taught how to cultivate it. The good news is that love can be learned and strengthened over time—especially with thoughtful guidance, structure, and support.
