I am retired after 32 years working with incarcerated young women the vast majority of which had histories of multiple abuse. They also were not highly educated. In order to communicate with my clients, I had to develop both a metaphor for understanding feelings and an easy to understand method of moving past their disdain and hatred of their abusers. The metaphor I developed was mastering emotions as tools and the “method” was forgiveness which focuses on the young woman as the “forgiver” and not the abuser as the “forgiven”. Ed Daube, Ph.D., The Emotions Doctor, is the author of two books both of which are Amazon Best Sellers: Emotions as Tools: a Self Help Guide to Controlling Your Life not Your Feelings and Beyond Anger Management: Master Your Anger as a Strategic Tool.
