Heart-Centered Mental Healthcare
From Dr. Michael McGee
As a three-times board certified psychiatrist with over 30 years of experience as the leader in integrating psychiatric treatment with spiritual interventions, Dr. Michael McGee has worked with thousands of patients and clinicians over the course of his illustrious career. Through his experience with addiction-based psychiatry, he has developed a trauma integrated approach to recovery that aims to reach every patient, but more importantly, allows clinicians to serve from a place of wholeness.
He takes a Be Well, Do Well approach to therapy, believing that only when clinicians and patients take the time to care for their own minds and hearts can they take care of the minds and hearts of their patients, family, and friends.
From custom trainings to support clinician vitality and skill to online courses and programs that enable you to harness the power of heart-centered, genuine love in your life, Dr. Michael McGee will guide you on the path to loving well, working well, and being well so you can do well.

Awakening Therapy
Dr. McGee has developed a "bio-psycho-social-spiritual" approach to recovery called Awakening Therapy. This method of healing is based on deepened understanding and enhanced awareness. This includes awareness of what is causing suffering and what needs to be done to reduce that suffering and live a more meaningful life.
Without Dr. McGee and this program, I don't know what my life would be like at this time.

Ketamine Therapy and Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy
Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic that has some psychedelic properties. It is very effective in relieving treatment-resistant depression, and there is evidence that it can be helpful in treating addiction and trauma.
Dr. McGee offers two types of ketamine treatment:
- Ketamine treatment for depression. This usually involves three low-dose treatments a week for two weeks, followed by tapering maintenance treatments.
- Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) for addiction and trauma. KAP usually entails one to three higher-dose ketamine sessions that induce a psychedelic-like experience. KAP includes careful preparation prior to receiving ketamine followed by integrative therapy sessions to harness the ketamine experience for healing and transformation.
Functional Psychiatry
Dr. McGee's approach to psychiatric treatment is eclectic, drawing on the best parts of many different types of treatment approaches: relational, psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, and mindful psychiatry.
Principles of Functional Psychiatry
- Symptoms make us human.
- Avoidance of distress-not distress-is the enemy.
- Symptoms are not signals of latent illness. They indicate a problem or unmet need.
- Symptoms can promote personal growth and healing.
- "Getting better" is realizing needs and aspirations while making room for distress.
- Medications promote positive changes in a patient's life, not avoidance.
- Avoid diagnostic labels that lead to hopelessness or self-blame.
Functional Pharmacology
Dr. McGee uses medications cautiously and only when appropriate. He will not provide prescriptions without an integrated treatment plan. Short-term medications are meant to empower patients to live healthy, productive lives. Some people require long-term medication treatment for serious psychiatric disorders. Dr. McGee works with each unique patient to determine how best to address their needs.
It is better to develop a personal recovery program rather than to take a prepackaged program that you have not authored.
